How is the programme taught?
The programme is delivered entirely online, over the internet. It is designed in such a way that, with access to a computer and an internet connection, you will be able to study at the time and place that suits you best. There is a compulsory residential component in Edinburgh towards the end of the programme to maximise the opportunity for students to support and learn from each other and to undertake activities more suited to a physical learning space including some formal assessment.
The course is delivered using the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s virtual learning environment. Students will join a community of learners and use a range of flexible learning methods including participation in discussion forums, online seminars and wikis. You will also have access to resources in a range of formats. You will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with and learn from a wide range of people from different countries.
While no sophisticated technical computing skills are required a good working knowledge of office applications, email and the internet will enable you to make the most of the online environment and the programme content.

How will I be supported?
There are a number of ways you will be supported during your studies these include:
- Allocated tutors on-line (via email and online discussion boards)
- Individual feedback and moderation of discussion boards
- Advice from the Directors of Studies, a Personal Tutor and Programme Administrator
- An introductory online induction to familiarise students with using the online learning environment and the requirements for the Programme
- A face-to-face residential course
- Peer support from other participants as part of the course activities and facilitated discussion
- Administrative support from the programme administrator support via the VLE, email and phone
- Programme Handbook
- A variety of learning resources accessed via the RCSEd Virtual Learning Environment, including:
- Learning resources in text, digital, video and audio formats – these will be updated as new technologies are developed and accommodated
- Online reflective activities
- Individual support via VLE including discussion boards for academic and peer support
- Access to on-line resources
- Formal process for student input into the management of the programme and private on-line student only discussion board

What are the programme’s formal learning outcomes?
The main aim of the programme is to provide health professionals working in remote and in some instances potentially hazardous locations the knowledge and skills to operate effectively in a remote environment using an evidence based approach.
To this end, students taking this programme will expect to:
- Acquire and apply theoretical knowledge underpinning effective evidence based clinical care in remote environments.
- Analysis requirements for and apply methods of communication and tele-health to remote healthcare
- Explain and incorporate into clinical care the effects of specific physical environments to the health and well-being of remote workers.

How much does it cost?
The payment plan options for all new students joining the programme will be to either pay the programme fees in full (this option protects from further inflationary increases) or to pay per module (module fees are subject to inflationary increases each year). CPD students pay on a per module basis.
The fees for the September 2012 intake are as follows:
- £5,784 for Diploma
- £2,892 for Certificate
- £482 per Module
- £482 per CPD

When can I start?

What qualification will I get?
A Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate in Remote and Offshore Medicine. You can also complete modules as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and will be awarded a certificate of completion.

How long will it take?
If you study continuously the online taught component can be completed in approximately three years. It is possible to take a break in your studies but to be awarded the Diploma you must complete 12 modules and attend the residential within a maximum of 5 years. To be awarded the Certificate you must complete 6 modules within a maximum of 3 years.

What time commitment do I need to make?
Each module is approximately 100 hours of student learning over a period of 3 months, so approximately 10 hours per week.

Is there a residential component?
There is a compulsory 2 day residential component at the end of the taught programme which is held in Edinburgh at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

What equipment will I need?
While studying on a module you will need convenient access to a computer with internet access. A reasonable connection speed will make the process of studying easier.

What are the entry requirements for the Diploma or Certificate?
Normally: an undergraduate health related degree or relevant health related professional qualification and current work experience in the Remote Medical Care area. If you don’t meet these criteria you are welcome to contact us to discuss your application further as all applicants are individually reviewed with regard to their previous qualifications and experience and you may be able to join the programme. All applications are approved by the Directors of Studies. You can view the Entry Criteria here.
Those applicants whose first language is not English, must be able to demonstrate a satisfactory level of both spoken and written English.
