Module 1: O01 Tactical Medicine

Pre-requisites: Module 1

Aim
Treatment under fire has been developed since the early 19th century and through warfare and tactical operations the medic has moved from the relative safety of the field hospital to the front line. Tactical medicine is about understanding the risks in a hostile environment and the treatment of injuries in this location.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate awareness of the principles of tactical medicine treatment options and care provided.
2. Plan for medical care in the tactical environment and the possibility of performing a non-medical role in parallel.

Module 2: O02 Expedition and Wilderness Medicine

Pre-requisites: Module 1

Aim
A medic in the wilderness or on an expedition may be in a situation where the support they can provide is limited by what they can carry, who they can talk to and how far away from definitive care they are. In either a team medic or rescue role, the challenges are often in the terrain and the remoteness of the area

Learning Outcomes

1. Plan for provision of care in the working environment.
2. Evaluate specific terrain and climate issues and their role in the ability to communicate, travel or provide a rescue response.
3. Appraise the impact on human health of extremes of temperature, humidity and altitude.

Module 3: O03 Learning and Teaching

Pre-requisites: Module 1

Aim
Remote Medics are often in a position of fulfilling an educational role. This module provides an introduction to key philosophies and techniques to make this effective. This module aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement teaching and learning activities within their professional role.

Learning Outcomes

1. Discuss the relevance of philosophies of education to adult learning.
2. Critically evaluate processes of learning and models for facilitating learning and supporting students with different characteristics.
3. Evaluate different methods for assessment of practice and identify their appropriate use in different contexts.
4. Plan a programme of learning outcomes and actions for a topic or issue within their area of work.
5. Present a topic utilising a variety of learning, teaching and assessment methods.

Module 4: O04 Humanitarian and Disaster Medicine

Pre-requisites: Module 1

Aim
Humanitarian relief covers the whole spectrum of basic needs such as food, water, shelter, warmth, hygiene, survival and medical care. This module looks at planning and delivery of medical care and other support services in this environment

Learning Outcomes

1. Evaluate the spectrum of supplying agencies and their role in a relief operation.
2. Demonstrate understanding of the medical role in such an operation and the means by which this can be achieved.
3. Demonstrate awareness that problems facing the patient may also effect aid and healthcare providers.
